Choosing a career is the most critical and most important task for a student. The career decides the future of a person. Hence, it is very important to choose your career wisely. However, choosing a career that suits you best is not an easy task.
There are a number of criterias that needed to consider while choosing for a career option. Such as training, cost of training, jobs prospects and average salary etc. But two more things that are really important are interest and capability.
Capability and interest are two different things. Capability is the potential of what you can do and the interest is what you want to do. If both your capability and interest are similar, Bingo, go for it. But in many cases , there is a conflict in both. Take an example, you have the potential of becoming a great football player but your interest is in cricket. As the football is underrated in India and money and fame in cricket made your interest in cricket. And if you choose to play cricket, you can be a good player with your hard work but not the best which you can be in football, because you are had the more football talent than cricket.
Similarly if you go with your potential and could not develop interest in that, you can’t succeed in that. There is a saying ‘Do what you love or love what you do‘. So it is important to recognise your potential and interest before you go to choose a career. If there is a conflict, it must be resolved at this stage.
How can you know your potential?
The students got to choose career options after 10th and after 12th. After 10th there are only a few options among stream to choose i.e. Science(Medical or Non Medical), Arts or commerce. After 12th there are vast number of options in the stream you are studying in.
I am discussing few career options after 10+2 in brief.
Non-medical has a large spectrum of career options. Engineering and Defense are the most favorite choice for non medical students. For Engineering B.Tech/BE is the degree you will opt for. There are many premier institutes like IITs, NITs and other private and govt engineering colleges offering various B.Tech. courses in different fields. Engineering itself is a very vast field having variety of branches some of which are totally different from others. So before going for a B.Tech. degree you must also look for the ideal branch.
NDA for National Defence Academy for officer ranks in Army, Air Force and Navy is another bright option. But NDA requires a totally different skill set. Other options for non medical students includes Bachelor of Computer Applications(BCA), Diploma courses in Engineering, Bachelor of Architecture and B.Sc. are specific courses for Non Medical Students.
Being a doctor is the first aim of the students of medical stream. There are many options for that. MBBS, BDS, BVSc, BAMS, BHMS are the courses for the aspirants who want to become a doctor. BSc Nursing, BSc Bio Tech, BSc are the other options for students of medical stream.
There are some courses common for the students of both medical and non medical stream. B. Pharmacy, B.Sc. Agriculture and B.Sc. Horticulture are some courses for students of Science stream.
B.Com. and BBA are the common courses for the commerce students. Other than these students also go for courses like Chartered Accountant, Company Secretary or diploma in Accounts.
If you want to be a lawyer, you can choose LLB course. Students of any stream in 10+2 can go for 5 years BA, LLB course. You can also do 3 years LLB course after graduation in any stream.
Hotel Management, Journalism and Mass Communication, Tourism Management are some other courses after 10+2.
Courses after Graduation
Administrative Services are the most sought career among the job aspirants. A graduate in any stream is eligible for Civil Services(IAS, IPS, IFS), State Administrative Services and Allied services exams. Civil services is one of the toughest exam in India, hence required a very focused preparation.
Banking sector is another career option for graduate of any field. Banks fill posts of Probationary Officer and Clerical positions through different exams. IBPS PO is a common exam for different banks.
SSC recruits candidates for various posts in central govt department through Combined Graduate Level(CGL) exam.
Combined Defence Services(CDS) is the other opportunity for students who want to join defence services after graduation. Graduates from Arts and Commerce streams can also take this examination but is restricted only to Indian Army for them.
Career in Teaching
Teaching is one of the best profession. I admire this profession most because without a teacher you would not become eligible for any of the above profession. Hence it is the most critical but most ignored. There is a general perception if nothing else for me then i’ll go for teaching and this perception needed to be changed.
Teaching is a joyful and well paying(in govt sector) job. You should choose teaching as a career if you enjoy to teach. You can go for JBT training or have bachelor or masters degree. Then you must complete B.Ed. course or pass SET/NET to be eligible for teaching posts TGT, PGT and assistant professors.
One Tip: One good decision can take your life on the right track and one bad decision can destroy your career. So be very cautious while choosing a career. Have a proper knowledge of all the career options you are considering and choose one which suits your interest and capabilities.
